My photofriend the FATman has been posting an occasional self-portrait for some time now, and I remember telling him at one point (something more than a year ago, I believe) that I really should do one, too, and—for some reason—today seems like a good day to follow through on my threat. This was my first-ever selfie, so far as I can recall, made with my first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 8500, in the summer of 2000. I can clearly recall taking a break from happily shooting away at CD, Squiddy, and Batty in gleeful play in the lake and, for the first time, holding the camera in my lap, rotating the articulated lens segment 180 degrees back upward at myself looking down, and firing this one shot. It sure doesn’t seem possible that nearly 14 years have elapsed since then!
OK, it’s time for a post script. I posted this an hour or so ago and just realized it isn’t Saturday yet. I was sort of hoping nobody had officially commented yet so I could withdraw it and put it up tomorrow as if it were new, but Laura and Adrian have beaten me to the punch so I’ll have to include this public apology for jumping the gun. Ah, well.

I had a sort of sneaky feeling that you were going to enjoy this, Adrian, but you (again) exceeded my expectations. This has been rolling around in the back of my mind for a long time, and it’s a good feeling to finally put it to rest. And the thought that your day is richer as a result of my frivolity enriches mine even more!

Yeah, it’s Saturday where Squiddy and Batty live, too, and the rest of the other half of the world. Of course–that’s what I must have been thinking! I’ll try to hold that thought.

I remember very clearly that it gave me a giggle too, when I first saw it on the camera’s (tiny) instant-replay screen. But–you only get one giggle a day? Maybe I should start posting twice a day…
