Our wonderful dog, Limo, is one of the sweetest dogs we have ever known (except when we’re riding in the car and he sees another dog on the street); he’s normally a total extrovert: He loves to meet people. He’s a Bassador— half Basset and half black Lab—and he has the head (and the devotion) of the Lab, but the basic conformation, the nose, and the single-mindedness of the hound. He’s one foot tall at the shoulder and four feet long (I’m writing a song about that…). He also has a fair portion of the extra skin of the Basset, so it’s difficult to read his facial expressions until one knows him really well. We almost named him Buster (for Buster Keaton, the ultimate deadpan). At some point in the not-too-distant past, I saw a photo someone had made of his dog while he (the dog) was lying on his back, and he (the photographer) had inverted the photo so that it looked like the dog had a big grin on his face. I kept this in mind, and made this shot of Limo during an appropriate moment. Wanna have some fun? Shoot your pet when he/she is upside down! It works with cats, too, by the way.

OMG, that’s hilarious! What a great idea – awesome photo!
Hmmm… I think I will try it on the kids in my class… :-)
Do you intend to have the kids roll over on their backs, or have them make photos of their inverted pets? (Both are worthy ideas!)
Every time my cats see me with my camera they run away! Anyhow, I’m going to give it a go and see what funny expressions I get ‘-)
Please let me know what you get! I’d suggest trying a moderate (200-300mm) telephoto with flash, so they aren’t quite so spooked by your being intimately close…
