Melancholy Monday: Memorial Day

We decided to attend the Memorial Day celebration today in the Prospect Hill Cemetery,  the oldest cemetery in Omaha. Part of the observance included a spectacular demonstration by the First Nebraska Volunteers, a group of uniformed Civil War re-enactors. The weather could not have been better, and there was a wonderful turnout. It is good to be reminded of the selfless sacrifices made by those who have defended us and those who continue to do so.

It looks like a wonderful event. I especially like the way you captured the flame in the last photo, but the middle photo is my favorite. Apart from the men’s expression, there are three styles of hat!

Yes, the hats and the uniforms were wonderful, but the visages of the volunteers made their portrayal all the more interesting. I found the modern glasses a bit distracting, but I understand full well their desire to see what was happening around them as well as they could. One would think, though, that a pair of Ben Franklins wouldn’t be too hard to find!
