We have a small stone wall behind the house with lots of nooks and crannies, and it’s my favorite place to look for spiders. I’ve only seen a few this year, but the weather has been so nice during the last few days that, surely, some should be out and about. I sat down carefully and began a watch. Over the course of the next quarter-hour or so, my patience was rewarded by the appearance of no fewer than four—two tiny jumpers and two hunters.
Young lycosid 939My favorite shot was of this one, probably a young wolf spider (family Lycosidae), though the bright sunlight made for rather harsh lighting conditions. I estimate the leg span at about half an inch. I’ll try for a better portrait over the next few days.
