Cool catkins, continued

As a sequel to the willow catkins from northern Minnesota that I brought you a few days ago, here’s what is currently waiting for us just outside our back door.
River birch catkins 7942The tree is a river birch (Betula nigra), one of several that we have, and they are high among the many reasons why we settled on this house. We just love this stage of their development!

  1. I have always loved the river birch for its copious peeling paper. The catkins are a definite plus. Nice, Gary.

The bark is really amazing. The nuthatches just love exploring all the nooks and crannies for insect life. And, yes, the catkins can really be spectacular. Thanks, Steve.
