Catkin cascade

Our teeter-totter weather is continuing its crazy fluctuations, but at last it’s tempting to say that the cold may finally be behind us.  My still-hesitant confidence is bolstered by the fact that, although it was only three degrees (F) above freezing just three days ago, our thermometers actually hit 100 (38°C) today.  Our river birch trees have put out their lovely catkins and they’re in full flower now.  When the sky is clear, they fairly glow among the tender new leaves, and they live up to their common names very well, resembling so closely the long tails of little kittens.

  1. Sunday was gorgeous with blue skys, Monday it rained and the winds reached 40 miles an hour, today we are back in the 70s, tonight it will get into the 40’s, and tomorrow it will rain again. The amazing thing is the garden has never looked healthier.

The catkins look like they’re at their best right now, Gary. I guess more and more sunny days will make for some lovely walks and photography opportunities, although to be honest, I’ve enjoyed everyone’s snow images over the US & UK winters this past season.

It’s so nice to see what everyone has done with the changing conditions and opportunities that we’ve had recently in different parts of the world. What a pleasure it is to be fairly confident of finding something new and different if we just keep our eyes open and our artistic wits about us!

Very beautiful, Gary – quite like our Hazel catkins. We can come nowhere near your 100 degrees F – it was >>>cold out on the Levels yesterday! A
