Following on the heels of a totally beautiful day yesterday, during which I gleefully performed about 5 hours of YardWork, today is gray, overcast, and blustery, with light
but steady rain that started a little over two hours ago and that is supposed to turn to snow as the temperature drops later today. About an hour ago I noticed a speck on one of the stone tiles above the bathtub in the guest bathroom. A closer look confirmed my hopeful
suspicion: a tiny salticid had taken up a patient position at an intersection of grout, apparently waiting for some traffic to come by.
Insects, however, are in dismally short supply in that part of the house. We had brought quite a few plants indoors on the weekend that had spent the warm season in the back yard, but they’d all gone into other rooms for winter storage, and it’s hard to imagine the circuitous route the spider must have taken to reach that particular location. So after a few careful photos, I gently guided it into a glass jar and moved it to a (hopefully) happier hunting ground on one of the dozen or so plants that now reside in my music room in the basement. There’s a far greater chance of its coming across a few morsels as it explores its new jungle world. Here’s hoping!
